I made this quilt for the Quilts by the Bay as contribution for the Mini Quilt raffle. Yes, you can win/own this quilt. Come to the show, buy some raffle tickets and put the tickets into the bucket for this cute Owl Condo.
Since I "won" a quilt in that raffle last year (I paid $5 putting all 6 tickets into the bucket for that quilt), it was only appropriate that I made a quilt for the show this year especially being a member of the guilt now. Having liked making my owl quilt and the condo ended up on the back, I thought it would be fun to have a condo as the main motif. These blocks are large - even though I fussy cut the owls 3" and not 3 1/2" per pattern. It came together quickly. One day for piecing - I did one block at a time - no efficiency or strip piecing - not for 3 blocks - I needed to calculate the new block size plus I wanted to place the fabrics.
The quilting was super fast for this size of a quilt and even the making the decision "how to quilt it" was fast this time. Elizabeth Hartman (my go-to designer) showed these options in her book - all modern, geometric and non-frilly (this is why I love her design sense). The house, of course had to have something square/rectangle. I did not want to quilt all over as there was clearly a border on this one (compared to my Owls in a House). The sharp saw teeth edges of the lightning bolds were just perfect for the straight edges of the roof line and house - plus it can be seen as a night sky background.
For the back, I used a strip of the 1/4-yard owl fabric that I fussy cut from, and then magically, the strip that was left from the curtain liner, was exactly the width and length I needed for the remaining back. What a great use of scraps!
And more magically, the binding: I don't know from where or why, but I had 2 strips of this blue polka dot fabric already folded and ironed as a binding strip - even the length worked out perfectly with 15" extra! I love when magic happens. As it is a wall handing, the triangles at the top are to place a stick for hanging in lieu of a sleeve. And the bottom triangle is my label.
Summary:
- started on 3/23, finished on 3/24
- Size: 15"x35"
- Batting (2 pieces of scrap sewn together)
- Binding attached on the back, then blanket stitched to the front with a matching thread - so hardly can see it (Aurifil 2784, 1246 in bobbin)
- New techniques: Quilted in Meandering Lightning Rod pattern, Hand quilted around each owl (not very visible)
Love the little owls. This is very cute. Great job!
